Nissan Confirms Nissan GT-R Hybrid

Nissan Has Officially Confirmed that the R36 Challenger will Feature a Hybrid Powertrain

Just a month ago we reported that a hybrid powertrain seemed like a likely future for the Nissan GT-R and this week Nissan confirmed exactly that. This means that the R36 will be a milestone vehicle–not just for the Nissan line, but for performance cars in general.

While it certainly won’t be the first hybrid sports supercar, it will almost undoubtedly be the most famous when it is officially released, as the popularity of the Nissan GT-R in the internet generation is almost unparalleled, and Nissan has already begun working on it.

Now, when a lot of people hear the word Hybrid they instantly think of vehicles like the Prius whose primary purpose is fuel conservation and being “Green”. Rest assured, that will not be the case for the R36 in any meaningful way at all.

Nissan has begun working with Formula 1 team Williams to build a super performance hybrid for the GT-R. The end result should be a great deal of instant torque and hp delivery to the Nissan’s AWD configuration–and, through the brilliant slip control of said AWD, down to the pavement–as well boat loads of high end power and torque later in the RPM band from the GT-R’s traditional combustion engine.

Of course, some people won’t like the hybrid configuration no matter what the performance is. For many people, the word hybrid just diminishes from a vehicle’s “wow” factor, but that will certainly be unfair for the R36.

Of course, the R36 is still certainly years away. Until then, we’ll have to do with updates on the R35–like the soon to be revealed NISMO GT-R which promises incredible performance numbers the likes of which the production world has never before experienced.
